NetflixDVD.us Netflix came up with a brilliantly simple concept when it launched its service in 1999:

NetflixDVD - Save the Earth!...

rent DVDs by mail for a flat monthly fee. You choose the movies you want on the Netflix Web site, receive from one to eight discs at a time (depending on the pricing plan you've chosen), and--using a prepaid envelope--return them in the mail whenever you're finished viewing.

The set monthly billing rate means that the decades-old bane of the video store--late fees--is a thing of the past. In fact, not only has Netflix's pricing strategy prompted brick-and-mortar rival Blockbuster to adopt a "no late fees" strategy at its retail stores, the old-line video rental giant has chosen to fight Netflix as well, offering a very similar online rental service starting in August 2004 that's since been enhanced by limited integration with its brick-and-mortar video stores.

With retailing superpower Wal-Mart already having pulled out and Amazon opting for digital delivery with its Unbox service, here's how the two main players in the online DVD rental market stack up against one another.

Although started a few years later than Netflix, Blockbuster Video is able to offer a great selection of DVDs online. There are currently over 85,000 titles are available, and it keeps growing every week. You’ll find classic cinema, modern favorites, television shows, children’s programming, health and fitness workouts, and, of course, the hottest new releases you’ve come to expect from BLOCKBUSTER Movies. The online search feature is similar to that of Netflix and with additional search by category, sub-category, format, and MPAA Rating.

GreenCine is an upmarket DVD rental service which focuses very well on more obscure and highbrow genres, but also covers the mainstream well. In their own words, the focus on “indie, arthouse, anime, foreign, classics, documentaries, and other esoteric fare.” Again, they do stock mainstream Hollywood blockbusters as well, but won’t have the depth of copies for new releases as a Netflix or Blockbuster. But they really do shine on their niche offerings, with all sorts of anime and foreign films you simply won’t find at the mainstream sites.

DVD Avenue is an excellent online DVD rental service. Tthe only things that keep it out of the top 2, are title selection and shipping. At 10,000 titles, DVD Avenue has less than half the selection as NetFlix. But if you are not into rare, hard to find titles, then that shouldn’t be a problem. The other issue is shipping. DVD Avenue currently only has 1 distribution center which is in Maryland, so unless you are on or near the east coast, shipping times may be unacceptable to you. On the bright side, DVD Avenue offers an outstanding and easy to use search/browse interface with several categories including several genres, New Releases, Academy Awards, AFI Top 100, Coming Soon, Television, PS2, XBOX, and an advanced search with criteria for title, actor, director, genre, MPAA rating, genre, and category. If you live on or near near the east coast and would like to option of renting video games, and/or adult movies, DVD Avenue might be the choice for you.
